Megan Prelinger - Author Talk and Book Signing


Come hear local author and cultural historian Megan Prelinger discuss her newest work Inside the Machine: Art and Invention in the Electronic Age. There will be time for Q & A after Megan's slideshow/lecture about her research. There will be a book signing afterwards. The Friends of the San Francisco Public Library will offer copies of her book for sale.

AboutM. Prelinger the author: Megan Prelinger is a former artist in residence at the Exploratorium and is a co-author, with Rick Prelinger, of five graphic atlases of Bay Area landscape history that form a permanent exhibit in the museum. They are both founders of the Prelinger Library in San Francisco, an independent research library open to the public, and is the architect of its information design system. She has also authored Another Science Fiction: Advertising the Space Race (Blast Books, 2010). Megan also is a naturalist and leads birding walks with San Francisco Nature Education.

Phonographic Memory


Tonight the Art, Music & Recreation Center will be hosting Phonographic Memory, a free monthly storytelling event where folks share personal memories about a record from their collection. If you wish to share your story and song please register via email at  

Register@PhonographicMemory.org

Include your full name, a brief synopsis of your story and the title of the record you would like to share. Presentations are limited to eight minutes. 

The show starts at 6:30pm sharp in the Latino/Hispanic Room located downstairs of the Main library and is open to all.

Fun with the Coen Brothers



For the month of January the Art and Music Center is sponsoring the Thursday at Noon Film Series with the theme "Dark Humor for Dark Days: the Movies of the Coen Brothers." This Thurday,  January 14th, "Fargo" will be shown, followed consecutively by "The Big Lebowski," and  "O Brother, Where Art Thou." The Library has a number of books about the Coen Brothers and the movies they've written and directed. SFPL also has some screenplays - in library parlance - called motion picture plays.
